What Happens When My Brakes Go Bad?

Many things can happen when your brakes go bad, but the most important thing is to have your vehicle towed to our shop so we can repair the brake system. In most cases, you will receive warnings that your brake system is malfunctioning. We are going to list these warnings below.

You Get a Warning Light

In some cases, you may get a warning light on the dashboard. When the brake system malfunctions, the engine control unit may turn on the ABS or Brake light while you are driving or when you apply the brakes. This light is alerting you that the brake system is not operating as it should be.

The Brakes Make Noise

You may also hear noises coming from the brake system if there is a problem with the brake system. For example, if the brakes are overheating, they will squeal every time that you use them. If the brake pads need to be replaced, the brakes may squeal, grind, or scrape when you use them.

The Vehicle Wobbles

Your brake system may also make your automobile wobble when you press down on the brake pedal. This is usually a sign that there is an issue with the rotors or calipers. The former could be that the surfaces need to be recut. The latter could be that there is a rock stuck in a caliper.

The Brake Fluid Leaks

Your brake system can also spring the leak if one of the hoses needs to be replaced. Consequently, you will see brown or red spots on the garage floor around your tires. The brake system can also leak from the master cylinder. When this happens, the fluid leaks underneath the engine.

The Brakes Overheat

As we mentioned above, your brake system will squeal if the brakes are overheating. You will also smell strong burning odors such as carpets or chemicals. This is a sign that the brake pads and brake fluid are too hot, respectively. Do not drive your automobile with an overheating brake system.

The Pedal Feels Strange

Finally, the brake pedal can feel strange underneath your foot if you have a problem in the brake lines or an issue with the master cylinder. For example, if the brake lines are filled with sludge, the brake pedal will feel hard. If the brake lines or filled with air, the brake pedal will feel soft.
