No one enjoys being in an overheating car or having their day interrupted by a car problem. But knowing what to do if your car starts to overheat while you’re driving it is really important. You may be able to avoid major engine damage by doing the right things. Here’s what Fountain City Auto Clinic recommends.
Stop in a Safe Spot
As soon as you notice that your car is overheating, you need to take action. Find a safe spot where you can pull over and park the car. Ideally this should be a parking lot where you can safely sit with the car’s hood up. If you’re forced to pull over onto the shoulder of the road, get as far over as you can and make sure you turn on your hazard lights.
Open the Hood
Opening the hood ensures that there’s air circulating around the car’s engine to help it to cool down more quickly. You might only be able to pop the hood at first, though, depending on just how hot the car is. Prop the hood open fully when you can and avoid starting the car for at least fifteen minutes before you do anything else.
Take Stock of What’s Going On
After you’ve let the engine cool down some, it’s time to take a look at what you’re up against. Check the coolant levels and see if there’s anything in the coolant reservoir. If that’s bone dry, you may have a bigger problem. Set the car into accessory mode without starting it and look at the temperature gauge. If it’s still in the red, you may need a tow. If it’s cooled down considerably, you may be able to get to your destination but another round of overheating might mean you can’t drive the car.
Follow up and Get the Car Checked Out
Assuming that your car cools down and you’re able to get where you’re going, you have some choices. Lots of car owners ignore the problem, and find that the car overheats again, only the damage is a lot worse and the engine is beyond repair. Your other option is to get help right away and find out what’s causing the overheating.
