Why Are My Brakes Squealing?

If you haven’t replaced your brakes in a while, they may begin to make funny noises. If you experience squealing or screeching when you depress the brake pedal, it could be a number of issues. One thing is for sure: you’ll want to get this noise checked out as soon as possible. The ability to slow and eventually stop your vehicle is no joke – you need this ability to stay safe on the road. So if your brakes keep squealing, look out for these signs that Fountain City Auto Clinic has provided.

Rotor Issues

When your brake pads press against your rotors, it creates friction that eventually contributes to slowing your car. Over time (every 60k miles or so), this surface can wear down and the rotors will need to be recut. You may hear this squealing noise when the rotors have worn down. Fountain City is more than capable of handling this important repair for you – give us a call as soon as you start to experience any sounds coming from your brakes.

Brake Pads

There are sensors in your brake pads that will alert you when they get too low. They will alert you by squealing, so make sure you pay attention to any sounds coming from your car as you drive. They may also squeal when they are too hot or have water inside them. As you probably know, brake issues are nothing to trifle with – your life may depend upon it. Change brake pads every 40k to 50k miles.

Insulation Around The Pads

Insulation is added to your brake system to prevent squealing, so old insulation may also contribute to squealing noises. Have your mechanic check this when you bring your car in for an inspection – it could even be that your previous mechanic opted not to install this insulation altogether.

Heat

Heat is a brake killer. As mentioned previously, overheating brakes can lead to squealing noises. We call this overheating “glazing” – a smoothing of the brake surfaces. This is very dangerous, as eventually your car will not be able to stop when you need it to.

If you’ve experienced any squealing from your brakes, make sure to have your car inspected immediately. Fountain City Auto Clinic in Knoxville, TN is standing by to properly assess and resolve any automobile issues you may be having. Call us today to schedule an appointment.
